These are the balloon garland supplies I actually reach for, not a list assembled to fill a page. I’ve used versions of these on everything from a single bedroom party to installs running thousands of balloons, and the reasons below are the same ones I’d give a new hire on our team.
Here’s what to buy, and why it’s worth getting right the first time.
A hand pump works fine for a dozen balloons. It doesn’t work for a real garland, where you’re inflating anywhere from fifty to several hundred balloons in one sitting. An electric pump with dual nozzles cuts that time down to something manageable and keeps your hands from cramping halfway through, which matters more than people expect once you’re past balloon number fifty.
This is the same category of tool I’ve used on installs from small home projects up to a 5,000-balloon mansion install, the volume difference is what a hand pump genuinely can’t handle at scale, not a marketing line.
The tape is what actually holds a garland together, and it’s the part most first-timers underbuy. A strip that’s too thin or too short forces awkward splices halfway through the garland, and the seam always shows. Buy more length than you think you need. Running out mid-build and improvising a patch is the single most common reason a DIY garland looks uneven.

Latex quality is where a DIY garland either looks professional or looks like a party-store afterthought, and it comes down to the balloon brand more than almost anything else on this list. Sempertex latex holds its round shape longer and takes color more consistently than the bargain multi-packs, which matters most in a garland since every inconsistent balloon is right next to a dozen others for comparison. We also work in biodegradable latex where it fits the brief, a real material choice, not a marketing claim.
Most DIY garlands read as flat because every balloon is the same size. A real assortment, mixing 5-inch, 11-inch, and one larger accent size, is what gives a garland actual depth instead of a uniform wall of color. A rough starting ratio is about two small balloons for every large one, though the exact mix depends on how full you want the finished garland to look. Sizing assortment covers that range in one order instead of guessing at ratios across separate packs. If you want the full build process once you have the sizes sorted, the full technique guide covers assembly step by step.
Good supplies get you most of the way to a garland that looks intentional instead of homemade. The rest is technique and time, usually more of both than people expect on a first attempt. If you’d rather start from a finished kit instead of sourcing individual supplies, our own premium garland kits are available on our Amazon Storefront.
If you’d rather skip the DIY route entirely, we build custom balloon garlands professionally, and the same installation portfolio behind that 5,000-balloon install, along with our broader work on corporate balloon installations in Los Angeles, is worth a look before you decide. If you do go the vendor route instead of DIY, it’s worth being selective: we’ve written before about why you should never hire the cheapest balloon company, and our post on the best balloon decorator in Los Angeles covers what to look for either way.
